My suggested book for October has actually been on display for several weeks. My thanks to Felicity and Kimberly Best for bringing it to my attention. It was to my dismay that I learnt recently that in a class of children visiting St George's only one girl knew The Lord's Prayer. I felt both the prayer and the book must be given prominence. Therefore, I am pleased to present, The Lord's Prayer retold by Lois Rock.
This hard backed book commences first with an introduction to Jesus, his Birth and Life. The parable of the Prodigal Son is related and God is likened to the Father in the story.
'Jesus explained... that the God of the universe longs to welcome everyone with love and laughter and he told his followers how they could speak to God in prayer, as a child speaks to a parent whom they can love and trust.'
So the prayer begins, on the left hand side of the book, with a short explanation following: - 'Give us this day our daily bread.' 'May the world's people have all they need to live in simplicity and joy.'
Simple but effective. On the inside there is attractive provision to enable the giver to record his or her name, together with that of the recipient, perhaps as a gift for Baptism.
The illustrations are by Debbie Lush and are wonderful. Bright, vibrant colours, long figures with little heads. No clear features but multi-ethnic communities are indicated which is very appropriate and correct. It is, after all, a universal prayer.
