Families Festival 2000

The Mothers' Union, together with the Diocesan Board of Education will be holding a celebration for the Millennium on Saturday 24th June 2000, 12.30.pm to 4.pm.

Entitled "The Light of the World" the celebrations begin in the Cathedral, Old Portsmouth with the Bishop, Roly the Clown and Solent Youth for Christ band. From the Cathedral we shall process to Southsea Common for a Balloon race, Praise Party and the cutting of a huge birthday cake.

Please come along, together with your children, friends children and / or grandchildren whom we hope will wear a costume depicting a character from the past 2,000 years who has, through their life, shown their Christian faith, eg. Mother Teresa of Calcutta, or St Francis, etc. or someone whom Jesus had met or known.

Sunday School and Toddler Groups are encouraged to bring a decorated banner. Please bring a picnic tea. More details are available from Margaret Symonds, 9225 2338 or Winifred Mancz 9226 3696.

Congratulations

Mrs Irene Davis has been an enthusiastic member of the Mothers' Union for over 50 years. She received a card commemorating her long service in church on Sunday 21st May.

Update on Iwelepe School, Nigeria

You may remember that I wrote a brief article about the nursery / primary school which we visited last February. At that time one unpaid teacher was trying to educate all the village children in a dilapidated school room.

Iwelepe School

Last week I received a letter and photos informing me that the Iwelepe School had officially been re-opened by the Bishop of Remo on 22nd March 2000. There are 45 children, in uniform and four teachers. At present they are meeting in rooms attached to the church. The next effort on behalf of the Mothers' Union in that diocese is to raise enough money to rebuild the school, so long neglected by the former government. The MU in this diocese hope to be able to help them. Your contributions would be greatly appreciated.
