OBITUARY

Ben Larcome

Ben was a real old style family solicitor following in his father's and grandfather's footsteps. He was born in Waterlooville and a complete survivor of the old village with lots of stories of the old Waterlooville.

His father died when he was twelve and he devoted himself to caring for his widowed mother. He joined the family firm after war service, having studied law at Guildford. He was much respected in his profession. He dealt with family matters and he also worked for the Roman Catholic diocese having a great rapport with several of the bishops including Archbishop King and the nuns in St Michael's Convent, Waterlooville.

He developed eye problems in the 1960's and at the same time his mother's health deteriorated but during a very difficult time he struggled manfully on. He eventually retired in the early seventies.

His links with St George's go back a long way and he remembered children's parties in the old Vicarage during the time of the Reverend A Sufferan and church fêtes at 'Mondisfield' his family home on the corner of Avondale Road and London Road, where Hannah Gardens is now situated. Although he was not a regular worshipper he always attended on great festivals and for some weeks before his death he received Holy Communion at home.

He was much loved and respected by many people in Waterlooville and we send our sympathy to Jean Brice who cared for him for many years.

May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

Malcolm Ferrier
