Garden Visit It was a lovely summer evening when we went to visit the gardens at Closewood House in Denmead. There were main paths with hedges and shrubs that had little gardens leading off them. The stately foxgloves with their beautiful marking were in full bloom and there were many varieties of clematis, one of the most eye-catching being a double pale mauve one. There was a lily pond with fish in it and at the end of this garden was an abstract sculpture carved by the owner. The lawns were immaculate with not a weed in sight and we marvelled that the husband and wife who lived at the house managed the gardens themselves with help of just one gardener. After a very enjoyable walk round the gardens we were served with tea, coffee and refreshments. These gardens are open to the public for a few days of the year, admittance £2.50, and this money goes to a charity chosen by the owners. Garden Party Although it was a lovely evening, it was too windy to sit outside on the lawn so we stayed in the hall for our American supper. We had invited a helper from the Jubilee Nursery, a school for small children with special needs and our charity for the year, to accept our cheque for them. We raised £500 which they will use to buy special chairs that can be adapted for the children. Dianne Woolgar is retiring as Chairman of the Group after serving for six years. She was presented with a bouquet of flowers and given a garden centre voucher in appreciation of all the hard work she has done during her term in office. As usual we had a delicious spread of food and a convivial evening was enjoyed by all. Margaret Deal |
