It had long been my ambition to visit Taizé. I had seen the service on television and thought what a beautifully simple and inspiring devotion it was. From time to time I had noticed that the Cathedral and one or two churches were having a Taizé service but for a variety of reasons, had not managed to attend. In April this year I made my first visit to Walsingham having been assured by Yvonne and members of the Walsingham Cell that it was an experience not to be missed. It was during this visit whilst experiencing services within large crowds, in rather ornate settings, that my thoughts turned to St George's. I love its simplicity and our Lord's Crucifix as a constant reminder of his love for us. Would it be an idea to try and arrange a Taizé service at St George's? I might think it a good idea but would anybody else? Those who have been to Walsingham will know that it has some good coffee shops as well as interesting buildings and a lovely atmosphere. Inevitably, Bronwen, Winifred and I found ourselves chatting in one of these and I asked Winifred if she thought Father Malcolm would consider a Taizé service. Sensibly, she said there was one way to find out and with her encouragement I bearded Father Malcolm over the excellent lunch, which the Shrine provides. I was more than delighted to find Father Malcolm very receptive to the idea. It transpired that he had visited Taizé on two occasions and was more than happy that we should have a Taizé service at St George's. The rest, as they say, is history. The service was attended by nearly 50 people, the church which Father Malcolm had 'decorated' with candles looked simply beautiful and the service opened with 'continental' recorded bells ringing within the church. My ambition to participate in a Taizé service had been realised - and in our own church. It would be good to know if those attending enjoyed the service particularly as - yes you've guessed it, I would love it to become a regular event at St George's at intervals which the Vicar and congregation would feel appropriate. Please let him know what you think! In the meantime, I expect there will be another visit to Walsingham - just talk to Yvonne! Rosa Miller The Taizé Service described in this article took place at St George's on Tuesday 23 October 2001. |
