All of St George's congregation will be familiar with the First World War memorial in the church porch. Surprisingly the same names are inscribed on the Gate of Remembrance. But where is the Second World War memorial? Sadly it does not exist and I find this somewhat shameful whatever the reasons for it. I am at present researching these 'missing names' and hope later this year to publish my findings. Fortunately the Commonwealth War Graves Commission have supplied me with a list of 26 Waterlooville names including four civilians killed in German air raids. Since then I have also discovered four more men from the parish who were killed and there may be others. If any readers of this article has family connections with any of those killed, I would be very pleased to receive information or a photograph. I can be contacted at 144 Stakes Hill Road, Waterlooville (023 9225 2338).
