WWDP, written by the Christian women of the Lebanon, will take place on Friday 7th March at the Methodist Church, Purbrook, at 2.pm. The speaker will be Ms Zoya Zuvcenko. All welcome. There will also be a service at Christ Church Widley at 7.30.pm when the speaker will be the Rev. Paul Norton. Lebanon is one of the smallest countries in the Middle East, less than half the size of Wales; it is bordered by Syria, Israel and the Mediterranean Sea. Behind the narrow coastal plain are two high mountain ranges and in Spring it is possible to swim and ski on the same day. Lebanon is an ancient Bible land; its name appears 75 times in the Bible. It is a land where the first Christians walked and the people are proud of its long Christian tradition. The position of Lebanon on the eastern shores of the Mediterranean has drawn in a variety of groups, who over the last 3,000 years, have left many sites of historic interest. The long civil war (1975-1992), precipitated by the large influx of Palestinian refugees into the country and later the Israeli occupation of the lands of South Lebanon, has created many problems. To rebuild the country the government has had to borrow large amounts of capital. The spending power of most people has become very limited. There are two groups - the very rich and the poor majority. Many young people have moved to the cities in search of better job opportunities. PAM DINNEEN |
