Irish Food and Life

One of St George's Ladies Group members, Margot Farrell, an Irish lady, gave us a glimpse into Ireland's history when she brought some delicious Irish food she had prepared earlier. When the potato crop failed it was a major disaster for the people as potatoes were their staple diet. Their cooking utensils were very primitive and Irish stew became a basic dish as meat and vegetables could all be put in one big container and hung over a fire to cook. Margot brought a large range of food, some of which was heated up at the hall, and everyone had a chance to sample potato bread, soda bread, wheaten bread, champ, Dublin coddle, colcannon and of course Irish stew. Everyone enjoyed trying all these delicious different types of food and Margot had many requests for the recipes at the end of the evening.

Skittles Evening

The skittles evening, always a popular event, was well attended with some ladies bringing their husbands. We had a change of venue this year and went to Mead End in Denmead where they have a bowling alley. We managed to get several games in during the evening and Fiona and Glynn Ross did a sterling job setting up the skittles each time. At half time we enjoyed a meal of chicken and chips, sausage and chips or vegetarian food. One of our ladies got two "strikes" and was way ahead of all the other ladies' scores. It was a very enjoyable evening and an attractive venue.
