St George's Ladies Group

The long awaited 40th anniversary of St George's Ladies Group occurred this year. The Group was started by Mrs Joyce Gibson, the wife of the Rev Gibson, vicar of St George's in 1964. Past and present members of the Group got together to celebrate the occasion. Some of the original members, from the time of inauguration when it was called The Young Wives Club, travelled long distances to renew acquaintance with the present members. Joyce was in demand all evening recounting the early days of the group which she founded. "Although the group has grown a lot since the early days and a lot more is done for charity, it's still about the same thing now as on day one - friendship" she declared.

A most interesting and entertaining evening was held, and the celebrations lasted well into the night! They toasted the past, present and future of the club. Interestingly, some of the groups old annual programmes were produced, some dating back to the 1970s and caused great interest among the members.

It is no secret that over the past three decades members of the Ladies Group have raised literally thousands of pounds for charity, by various means, raffles, auctions, cake sales and Fêtes, a fact that was appreciated by the original members.
