In honour of our Taizé Service on 10th October, I have chosen a new book by Brother Roger of Taizé entitled 'God is Love Alone'. Brother Roger has spent more than sixty years of life in the Taizé Community. In this book he brings together the essentials of his thinking, trust, simplicity and joy, together with personal accounts of events and people that have left their influence. The format of the book comprises several main headings with connected sub-headings. For example, the book opens with Are there realities which make life beautiful? Followed by A simple trusting, Trying to understand everything in another person and Do you recognise the way of hope? Particularly special are the Three letters to young people towards the end of the book. In the first section, A prospect of happiness, Brother Roger states: "For a life to be beautiful, extraordinary abilities or great abilities are not required. There is happiness in the humble giving of oneself. When simplicity is closely linked to kind-heartedness, then even people without resources can create a space of hope around themselves." A very beautiful book - these few words of mine do not do it justice. Highly recommended. God is Love Alone by Brother Roger of Taizé (Continuum) ISBN 0-8264-7020-3 (PB) - £7.99. Lynn Winter |
