As we begin a new year our thoughts and our prayers must be centred on the victims of the terrible events in South Asia. No theological or philosophical debates can help us understand such an horrendous disaster. Our minds cannot hope to explain it, but our minds can spur us to offer whatever help and assistance we can. Money can be donated through local banks and post offices; through charity shops in Waterlooville and through St. George's Church. Please place your gift in an envelope marked "Tsunami Appeal" and put it in the collecting plate at the back of Church. The group "Friends of the Maldives" is making a collection of food and cleaning materials to be flown out to the islands. These flights will continue for the next few months as the islanders struggle to rebuild their homes, their businesses and their lives. The group is asking for: Dried foods eg: rice, pasta Tinned foods eg: baked beans Packet foods eg: soups Baby foods in tins not jars Disinfectant in plastic bottles Disposable gloves First Aid equipment Short wave radios Items can be left at the back of Church, but please note that glass jars and bottles cannot be sent so make sure that only tins, plastic bottles and packets are donated. Thank you for your help. |
