St George’s Church, as you may know,
Each year presents a New Year show,
This year we thought we’d have a change:
A meal and musical arrange.
And dress up, all who would be there,
To grace our West End Premiere.
In sparkly tops, and finely gowned,
New bow ties bought and cufflinks found,
We there arriving, eager all,
Assembled at St George’s Hall.
We listened to St George’s Band
With champagne glasses in our hand.
Queuing for photos at this time
In groups we stood in patient line.
We dined on melon, and cold meat
And salad, followed by a sweet,
All this accompanied by wine.
A demonstration of the sign
We’d like some more, our waiters said,
Just place your glass upon your head
(Not balanced there, you understand,
Too great a skill that would demand
Of even us!) And then ’twas time -
Our chairs were re-arranged in line,
The music played, the lights were dim
The entertainment did begin.
Great songs that everybody knows
Selected from famous hit shows
Starting with “No Biz Like Show Biz”
And beautiful songs from “Les Mis”.
We finished with “Those Canaan Days”
The Audience were full of praise.
I’m sure that everybody there
Enjoyed our West End Premiere.
Our thanks to all, most surely due,
To singers, dancers, backstage crew,
St George’s Band, our pianist,
(And anybody else I’ve missed!)
All who prepared and served our meal
A special mention due, I feel
To those who washed and put away!
To finish, there’ s just space to say,
As well as photos there will be
On sale, quite, soon, a DVD.
