Alresford by the river For our June meeting this year, we had a branch outing to Alresford. On a rare (at the time) lovely day, fifteen of us (including two husbands) set out in cars for a scenic country drive, and arrived in good time for a really nice pub lunch at the Swan Hotel. After lunch we separated to explore this lovely Georgian town with some interesting history. Some of us followed part of the ‘Millennium Trail’ and went on the riverside walk past the mill (a little muddy). Others explored St John’s Church - the parish church of ‘New Alresford’ or the ‘Old Alresford Pond’ or the station - home of the Watercress Line. There was just time for a cup of tea before re-joining the group to go to St Mary’s Church - the parish church of Old Alresford. Here we saw many exhibits dedicated to Mary Sumner and the Mothers’ Union. The incumbent made us very welcome and conducted compline for us all before our journey home. Everyone agreed it had been a very enjoyable day. Pat Millard |
