SPCK have a variety of new titles just released or soon to be released. My suggestions are taken from the SPCK booklet detailing new and forthcoming titles, Summer to Autumn 2007. Praying With the Bible by Philip Law. The Bible is for everyone, and Praying With the Bible is for everyone who wants to live in deeper and more prayerful harmony with God’s Word. This is a book worth turning to again and again. Keep it next to your Bible, and listen to the still, small voice of God breathing through it every day. Spiritual Direction for Every Christian by Gordon Jeff. For many years spiritual direction was regarded as an elitist activity designed for the benefit of the clergy and a few especially devout laity. Gordon Jeff presents an alternative to that view, arguing that spiritual direction is a benefit, which every Christian can enjoy. Cicely Saunders, The Founder of the Modern Hospice Movement by Shirley Du Boulay and Marianne Rankin. Dame Cicely Saunders was the founder of the Hospice Movement, in which Britain leads the world. Her work transformed our approach to the care of the dying, and also the debate about euthanasia. She died in 2005. Sacraments of Healing by The Reverend Canon Christopher Gower. Christopher Gower explores the sacramental role played by the rites of the anointing of the sick, penance and reconciliation, and the Eucharist in the Church’s ministry of wholeness and healing. The Use of Symbols in Worship (Alcuin Liturgy Guides). Edited by Christopher Irvine. Common Worship allows and encourages the use of symbols in worship. Individual chapters look at the use of a particular element or symbol in a range of different services, and suggest imaginative ways in which these symbols might become more visible and handled in ways that might allow them to ‘speak’.
