Eurovision Revisited

St George’s based its show this year
On a tradition held most dear.
Our Eurovision Song Contest
Consisted of the very best
Artists and songs that year by year
Upon our TV screens appear.
Revisited by us anew
In this our annual Church Revue.

Tony and Lindsay were just right
As Host and Hostess for the night,
Not Ant and Dec, nor Kate and Tel,
But our two “didn’t they do well!”

Each table had its scoring sheet,
One for each person to complete
And master copy for the “Chair”
To add the scores assembled there.

Waterloo (Sweden)
Our show began with Waterloo
Hats, scarves and boots and trousers too
With outfits worn the “Abba” way -
Our stars put on a grand display.
And later sang again this song
So everyone could sing along.

Knock Knock (Wales)
Five ladies sang this song and were
Apparently in some danger.
Gigantic plastic hammer things
Lunged disembodied from the wings,
Appeared on cue, at each point where
Was sung the phrase “Knock, Knock, Who’s there?”

Halleluiah (Israel)
A servers chorus next, were quite
Angelically all robed in white
Vying for space, this group was viewed
Collectively a SERVITUDE.

Ding a Dong (Netherlands)
The Netherlands entry, the song
Entitled strangely Ding a Dong
Appeared, as far as I could tell
More ‘bout a flower than ‘bout a bell.

Hard Rock Halleluiah (Finland)
The Men created quite a stir
In bull’s horn hats and chains they were.
With energy they stormed the stage
A Rock Group from the Viking age.
With locks of black, except I think
Our Deacon who had dyed his pink!
(To vote for them I was not able
As I was on the Finnish table).

All Kinds of Everything (Ireland)
In solo Lesley, next did sing
The song “All Kings of Everything”.
So beautifully sung, I’d say
As good as Dana any day!

Boom Bang a Bang (Scotland)
And next we heard “Boom Bang a Bang”.
In night attire our foursome sang.
Pyjama clad, with favourite Ted
And fluffy mules, straight from their bed
‘Cept Sandra who the stage was sharing
Whose costume was a mite more daring.

Save your Kisses for Me (England)
The last song of this half began
The English “Brotherhood of Man”.
With kisses saved innocently
For Pa’s return, by child of three.

The Interval was next, the queue
“Snaked” to the hatch, for there we knew
Awaited each a plate of food.
First meat and veg, and then a pud,
Then tea and coffee, glass of wine
To wash this down, and then ’twas time
To start the Second Act. We heard
A sweet duet about a bird.
And next we took a virtual flight
The cast Flying the Flag tonight.
If we were peckish on the way
Lynda had nibbles on a tray.
But since so recently we’d dined
The proffered savouries declined.
(With one of two abbreviations)
Next offering Congratulations
Passed Jane and Tony’s Are you Sure
Then Let me Be the One. We saw
A barefoot Puppet on a String
Until a Red Red Rose did bring
Us to another British hit
Entitled Just a Little Bit.
Ooh, Aahing musically by
Past Bryan Johnson’s High High High
Beg, Steal or Borrow and then we
Had reached the gripping finalé.
A giant scoreboard did appear
On which the points were shown quite clear.
And the excitement how it mounted
As all the total scores were counted.
The song sung by the winning nation
Received the usual invitiation
As this was Wales the ladies came
Back onto stage to sing again.
And then, as I have said before
We all sang Waterloo once more.
With thanks to all the backstage crew,
And caterers and ushers who
Working so hard produced the best
Yet Eurovision Song Contest.
And all that’s left is now for me
To recommend the DVD.
