I received a wonderful book for my birthday, ‘Whispers of Wisdom for Busy Women’. It contains a year of inspirational readings, a page to a day. The format is straightforward, a scripture verse, a reflection and a prayer. It has been such a lovely piece of tranquillity at the end of the day. An example is under the heading ‘Help for the Tough Times’. The verse is from John 14 v 18 (NIV) ‘I will not leave you as orphans, I will come to you’. ‘Joan stared at the envelope in her hand. Another wedding invitation, this time from her cousin’s daughter. She set it aside, annoyed that it made her feel so alone. ‘Joan knew all too well that she was not alone. Her days were filled with work... Yet the loneliness created by her husband’s death never quite left her, no matter how active her life. There were times when she struggled to move on to the next task, the next responsibility, when all she wanted to do was to grieve. ‘God never, ever, abandons us. No matter how busy we are. He never forgets us. He promised his followers that he would also help and support them, a promise He still keeps today. ‘Lord, You sent your Holy Spirit as a helper and guide. No matter how tough our world becomes, let us remember Your presence in our lives. Amen.’ From Whispers of Wisdom for Busy Women published by Barbour Publishing Inc. Used by permission. ISBN 978-1-60260-137-6. Another book gift that has been a delight is one you may well be familiar with. ‘The Friendship Book of Francis Gay’ has been in publication for many years. It contains an uplifting verse, tale or Biblical quote for every day of the year. Plus thirty beautiful colour photographs of the beauty that surrounds us. I especially liked this entry - ‘Our friend Greta saw this notice outside a church one afternoon when she was visiting a nearby town: ‘Be careful how you live. You may be the only Bible some people will ever read.’ The Friendship Book of Francis Gay. DC Thompson & Co. ISBN 1-84535-153-3 Happy summer reading everyone. Lynn Winter |
