The Parish Church of St George the Martyr, Waterlooville

We discovered this delightful small church at the southern end of Franz Joseph. It was built in the 1930s and you approach through a natural arch of rain forest trees and plants. The notice in the porch asks visitors to:

“Please close the door as you leave, even if it was open when you arrived. If the door remains open birds, opossums and flies find the place irresistible. Yes – they are all God’s creatures but they have the rest of creation to worship in. Thank you.”

I don’t think their electrics board would pass quinquennial inspection but once inside you can’t help but be impressed. A Wednesday 10am St George’s congregation would be a “full house” and there is certainly not enough room for a full team of servers, thurifer etc around the altar. Sermons will have to be riveting because the natural beauty of the river and mountains through the east window will be an easy distraction.
