Lent and Holy Week

During Lent and Holy Week there were lots of extra services, with morning and lunchtime prayers, Stations of the Cross (at different times on different days to suit everyone), and lovely Sunday evening services.

On Palm Sunday we met at the new Catholic Church and processed, together with Pedro the donkey, to St George’s; on Maundy Thursday there was a traditional washing of feet during the Parish Eucharist, and on Good Friday (in the sunshine) another procession, this time from the Baptist Church following the Cross, before gathering in St George’s Church Hall for tea and hot cross buns. At 2pm, the Liturgy, with the Reading of the Passion and Veneration of the Cross followed by (yet more) hot cross buns.

The Passover Seder Meal on Holy Saturday was very well attended, and after this we all gathered for the Lighting of the New Fire of Easter.

Film Club - Sunshine (April 18th)

I found this film a little disturbing as well as confusing, with its story of the intolerance and persecution towards people of the Jewish faith living in Hungary during the first half of the 20th century. Confusing - as Ralph Fiennes re-appeared as three generations of the same family. A film I was still thinking about several days afterwards.

Film Club - Rainman (May 9th)

Rainman - about a car journey in which “Brother-napping” purely for financial gain evolved into affection, connection and a wish to protect an autistic brother.

Viva Espana

We were warmly welcomed to “Restaurant Iglesia St Giorgio” with a glass of Sangria and a Spanish themed quiz on each table. A tapas style starter was followed by Paella, Granja de Pollo (chicken and olives in orange juice), Tortilla Con Cebolla (omelette with potato and onion) and Patatas Bravas (potato cooked in tomato and herbs).

We finished with Souffle de las Naranjas y los Limones (citrus mousse).

Entertainment including a melon sculpting competition, camel racing, plus singing completed a most enjoyable evening.

Jumble Sale

St George’s held a Gigantic Jumble Sale in the Church Hall on Saturday 28th April. With stalls selling toys, books, bric-a-brac etc, teas and coffees and bacon rolls, a total of £240 was raised for church funds.

Civic Sunday Service

For the first time ever, on Sunday 13th May the Borough of Havant’s Civic Sunday service transferred from Havant to St George’s Waterlooville, in thanksgiving for the new Mayor of Havant, Councillor Gerald Shimbart and the Mayoress Councillor Mrs Elaine Shimbart.

Confirmations

Also on Sunday 13th May, the Deanery of Havant Confirmation and Eucharist took place at St George’s, with the Bishop of Portsmouth as Celebrant, and candidates for confirmation from St George’s, All Saints East Meon, and St Francis Leigh Park. Those from St George’s were Mary Isaacs, Daniel Palmer, Archie Sadler and Theo Rogers.
