Burns Night
On Saturday 26th January we celebrated the 254th anniversary of Robert Burns with our usual ‘Burns Night Celebration’.
After a welcoming cup of punch and the famous ‘Selkirk Grace’, and of course the traditional ‘piping in of the Haggis’, we tucked into our meal of leek and potato soup, haggis and veg and ‘typsy laird’ sherry trifle. Afterwards there was dancing and a raffle.
Film Club -
We started this film ½ hour early as it is fairly long. Its story, beginning in 1913, is about a wealthy Danish woman (played by Meryl Streep) who enters into a marriage of convenience with Baron Bror Blixen and moves to Africa to run a dairy farm.
However, she discovers her new husband has actually bought a coffee plantation instead which later (when at last it begins to be successful) is devastated by fire. Her marriage to the philandering Baron has ended by this time and she has fallen in love with Denys Finch Hatton (played by Robert Redford) a dashing but very restless big game hunter.
At the end of the film he is killed in a plane crash and she returns penniless to her native Denmark (where she became an author). An interesting film loosely based on an autobiography, but the best part of all was the wonderful African scenery.

Table top sale

International Gourmet Evening
At our very successful International Gourmet Evening on Saturday 2nd March we were treated to a selection of foods from around the world; from Asia, prepared by the Tweenies, from the Americas, by the Servers and from Europe by the Choir and Band.
We each took a plate and moved from group to group to collect a third of a starter, then main course and finally dessert. Wine and soft drinks were available and after tea and coffee a variety of entertainment followed. It was a great evening, enjoyed by all. For a recipe from the Gourmet Evening, turn to page 30.
Film Club -
This early 1960’s film starring Kenneth More and a young Susannah York was set in beautiful countryside at a rather magnificent French chateau.
A young family come to stay; with their sick mother taken to hospital, their 16 year old sister is in charge.
She chooses this inconvenient moment to “blossom into adulthood”, fall in love with a rather mysterious older man and causes general chaos.
After the amorous drunken waiter falls to his death from her bedroom window he is unceremoniously dumped into a nearby river by Kenneth More’s character who then disappears into the night.
Our film in April will be Roman Holiday.
Womens’ World Day of Prayer
The Womens’ World Day of Prayer service was held on 1st March at St Wilfrid’s Church Cowplain.
Prepared by Christian Women of France, it was entitled “I was a Stranger and you Welcomed Me.”
With Bible readings, songs and hymns, and “Life Stories”, the difficult issue of migration was considered from both sides.
A lovely, rather thought provoking service.
Refreshments were served for us afterwards in the Church Hall.
