Denman’s Garden Outing

On a fine day in May the Mothers’ Union members set out on their annual outing, several cars then set off, the first stop being the Spur Pub at Slindon where we had a very delightful time, the food was excellent and very well presented. We then went on to Denman’s Garden at Fontwell, West Sussex. This was a delightful afternoon walking round the lovely natural gardens all trying to remember the names of the various plants and trees with much laughter when we had no idea. The sun was shining and the birds were singing, it was so peaceful, we did have one very small shower but that did not deter us, after this pleasantry we naturally ended up in the very nice tea room and were the last to leave the tea room as they were closing so with a quick visit to the gift shop we set off home having had a lovely time.

General Meeting

On June 11th the General Meeting of the Mothers’ Union was held in the Forum in Bath where we met and listened to the newly elected Worldwide MU President Lynne Tenby and Trustee members. In the afternoon we were entertained by Adrian Plass who was so funny we could have listened to him for much longer. The poor man had to sit all the time as he has sciatica, he even joked about that. Three members from St George’s Mothers’ Union attended this meeting.

Diocesan Festival Service

On June 19th the Diocesan Festival Service was held at the Cathedral. The Celebrant and Preacher was the Very Reverend David Brindley, Dean of Portsmouth. Twenty branch banners were carried in, Janet Johnson carried St George’s banner and Margaret Symonds carried the Action and Outreach banner. The choir was formed of MU members, about 30, and really enhanced the whole service especially during the giving of the Sacrament. Tea and coffee were served in the cathedral, there was also a very good MU stall selling lovely cards for all occasions and other MU publications.

Garden Party, 18th July

After previous years when it was too wet to hold our Garden Party outside, this year it was too hot, so we retreated to the comparative coolness of the Church Hall.

We had invited guests from the Baptist Church, St Wilfrid’s, Christchurch, Portsdown, Denmead and Clanfield, and about thirty ladies (and one or two brave gentlemen) enjoyed a buffet tea of savouries, cakes and biscuits and tea and coffee.

There were stalls for ‘bring and buy’ and MU merchandise, a Treasure Hunt, Guess the name of cat and number of sweets in jar, and a raffle. £109.21 was raised for our Overseas Funds.
