Passover Seder
The Passover Seder originally commemorating the Exodus of the Hebrews from Egypt, the beginning of the Jewish Faith, celebrated by Jesus at the Last Supper and linking past with present in the Holy Eucharist today.
This ancient tradition is a story within a meal.
At its conclusion all moved outside for the Lighting of the New Fire, the Easter Candle was blessed and the service ended in St George’s Church.
1000 Guineas Race Night
What a great evening this was!
With eight races, six horses in each, we placed our bets and cheered on our chosen mounts with great enthusiasm. Daniel was chief dice thrower with a volunteer assistant from each table. The first dice decided which horse would move, the second how many spaces.
After the fourth race there was a hot buffet. I chose chili, jacket potato and bread roll, followed by a cooling choc ice!
There was a raffle and the horses in races four and eight were auctioned. A total of 1031 guineas (£1,083) was raised on the night for St George’s Repair Fund.
St George’s Parish Lunch
On Sunday 17th April, St George’s held its APCM and Parish Lunch. As this was also Palm Sunday it proved to be a busy day.
After the meeting, lunch was served in the Church Hall. Nine large dishes of cottage pie had arrived from various kitchens around the Parish, and was served after a starter of pate. We finished the meal with gateaux and tea and coffee.
The Wind Cannot Read -
A larger than usual gathering watched this late 1950’s film starring a youthful and very handsome Dirk Bogarde as the British Airman in love with a Japanese language teacher.
Although told in a wartime setting this was essentially a love story in the “old fashioned” tradition with dramatic music and definitely no “naughty bits!”
A film very much of a past era, with a sad ending, but very enjoyable.
My Best Friend’s Wedding -
A lightweight, fun film which I enjoyed (although others were not so sure), in which Julia Roberts endeavoured (unsuccessfully) to sabotage her best friend’s wedding.
Since in the end she failed to get her man I suppose you could say it didn’t have a happy ending, at least not for her, but somehow, in this film, it didn’t seem to matter.
Our next film, part of the Waterlooville Music Festival, will be on Wednesday 15th June and is Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. The July film on Wednesday 13th will be Captain Correlli’s Mandolin.
