PORTSMOUTH CITADEL SALVATION ARMY BAND Combined Churches of Waterlooville Choir

Founded in 1880, Portsmouth Citadel Band is one of the oldest and most well known corps bands within the Salvation Army. The present band are well aware of their great heritage and give thanks to God for the way the band has been used in the past, and is committed to maintain the traditions and standards of Portsmouth Citadel Band.
Portsmouth Citadel Band currently has 37 members and is continuing to grow. The band's members are first and foremost committed Christians who wish to use their musical gifts to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ. The band has a large number of young people which enhances the energy and vitality of the band.
Portsmouth Citadel Band takes an active role in the corps mission to spread the news of the love of Jesus Christ to the surrounding community. The band regularly features at many high profile city events and has toured the UK extensively. The band has also had the opportunity to tour Europe and the USA on several occasions.
In November 2016 the band joined Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Collingwood to lead the Remembrance Day service in Guildhall Square, Portsmouth, and it has featured at the Big Church Day Out, the biggest one-day Christian event in the UK, alongside such artists as Graham Kendrick, Matt Redman, TobyMac, Israel Houghton, and the King's Chamber Orchestra.
A wonderful opportunity to enjoy this famous and hugely accomplished band performing a selection of hymns that have featured in Royal Weddings, to mark the two Royal Weddings that are taking place this year.

Roderick Starr Conductor
Roderick studied the organ under Isadore Harvey and later general music under Ernest Stride and David Squibb in Kent when he joined the Royal Marines School of Music and from where he developed as a composer and conductor. He went on to become a Bandmaster and a Director of Music. He studied harmony and composition under Michael Hurd and later 20th Century composition with Martin Ellerby.
For many years Roderick was the Musical Director of the Portsmouth Chorus until his retirement from that role in 2012.
He has been commissioned to compose works ranging from Christmas carols to large symphonic pieces. Roderick is a Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Music in conducting. He holds a Masters Degree in 20th Century Composition and is a Fellow of the Incorporated Society of Musicians. In October 2015 Roderick was appointed as Director of Music at St George’s Church, Waterlooville.
Nigel Smith Organ
Nigel has appeared at the Waterlooville Music Festival on many occasions, and is piano accompanist for Opera Comique, Hampshire Police Male Voice Choir, Phoenix Singers amongst others. He is also the Organist at St Peter and St Paul Church, Fareham.
