Dorothy Bailey was a lady who was a well established member of St George’s, who showed her faith by caring for her own mother for at least 20 years, and then for her sick husband; but also a lady proud of her heritage, having been born in Wales.

Born in Pembroke with one brother and two sisters, the family moved to Portsmouth as her Dad got a job in the dockyard. Dorothy worked in the office of De Haviland and then as the Manager at the Portsmouth branch of BSM.

Her hobbies included crochet, reading, knitting, and teddies which she made for St Mary’s Hospital and children in the church. She will be remembered by these, they are still used every Sunday.

She was a member of the Mothers’ Union, following her mother’s footsteps.

Her daughter-in-law Pam describes her as a lovely mother-in-law, kind, generous, glamorous and devoted to her family. How awful for Dorothy to lose her husband Freddie and son Derek but how great that she had Pam to look after her.

In recent years she has lived in sheltered accommodation at The Lodge, Waterlooville, and then a rest home on Hayling Island where she was visited by friends from St George’s.
