Safari Supper

On Saturday 2nd November 32 members of the congregation set off for a Safari Supper.

On arrival at the Church Hall for the first course we were greeted with a welcome drink and later invited to choose our starter. For our main course we all set off to various venues where our hosts had prepared delicious meals of their choice, and accompanying wine. After the meal we all met up again at Glendene for desserts and coffee. The evening ended with fireworks in the garden - all agreed we had enjoyed a happy evening of good company, food and wine.

Race Night

St George’s held a St Andrew’s Day Race Night on Saturday 30th November in aid of Naomi House. (Naomi House and jacksplace are hospices for children and young people with life limiting conditions; there are two specialist units, Naomi House for children, and jacksplace for young adults. Each unit is purpose built and offers an appropriate environment for each age group.)

We were welcomed with Tony Rice-Oxley’s famous hot punch, delicious as ever! At 7.45.pm the horse racing began. Daniel and a volunteer from each table threw a dice and Tony moved the numbered horses forward accordingly.

Every horse I backed had obviously had a very late lunch and felt disinclined to hurry. Not even using the “dice app” on John’s phone helped - they all failed to reach the winning post first. It’s a good thing I didn’t take up gambling as a career!

After race 4, a “ploughman’s supper” of french bread, butter, cheese, chutney, salad, and an unexpected bonus of jacket spuds was served. Choc ices and teas and coffee followed.

Then it was back to the serious matter of racing. At the end of the evening a raffle was drawn. It was a really enjoyable evening and £1,184 was raised for Naomi House, which was presented to a representative from the Charity at the “Light up a Life” service on Wednesday 11th December.

Film Club. Nov.2013: Breakfast at Tiffanys.

This 1961 film stars George Peppard as a young writer and Audrey Hepburn as his very untidy neighbour with a mysterious past.

Their destiny is obviously to be together, and after her efforts to ensnare a wealthy husband come to nothing, they rescue the beautiful ginger cat she has recklessly discarded and all go home to live happily ever after.

Film Club.  Dec.2013: A Christmas Carol.

This 1984 version stars George C Scott as Ebenezer Scrooge, an elderly gentleman who, after a series of disturbing dreams changes from a lonely miserly business man into a generous and kindly employer and Uncle.

Christmas Bazaar

St George’s held its annual Christmas Bazaar on Saturday 7th December.

The Church Hall was filled with brightly decorated stalls selling cakes, gifts, jams and pickles, plants etc. Brunches and teas and coffees were available served from the kitchen. There were two tombolas, one just for chocolate - lovely! a bookstall and a Grand Raffle.

A total of £1,472.53 was raised for Church funds.
