Meridian Winds
Meridian Winds Concert Band was formed around twenty years ago by a group of like-minded musicians, their aim was to create a wind band to perform music to the best quality possible. The band rehearses on alternate Sunday afternoons and was originally based in Southampton but has now moved to Fareham at Wallington Village Hall.
The band numbers around 35 members performing high quality concerts across South Hampshire, with a repertoire that includes modern, traditional, and light entertainment music of different genres.
Don Lloyd, Musical Director of the Meridian Winds
Don was born and raised in Bournemouth. His earliest musical recollections are the piano lessons given to him by his Mum. His other main musical influence in his teenage years was the Bandmaster at Oakmead School for Boys, Courtney Bosanko. Don left school in 1976 and the following September he joined the Royal Marines School of Music at Deal, as a bassoonist. He passed out from training a term early in 1978 and was posted to Staff Band as the Principal Bassoon. Don served with the Royal Marines Band Service for the next 32 years, rising to the rank of Warrant Officer (2) Bandmaster, concluding his career as the Chief Instructor Higher Training, at the Royal Marines School of Music, HMS Nelson. Whilst in the Royal Marines Band Service he served all over the world. The D–Day 60th anniversary celebrations and the closure of Hong Kong were just two highlights from a long and varied
career.
Don passed the ATCL performers diploma in 1997 and gained his Associated Board Certificate of Teaching (CT ABRSM) in 2000. In 2002 he was one of the first group of Royal Marine Musicians to graduate with BMus(Hons) through the association with Portsmouth University. He then gained the LRSM (conducting diploma) with distinction at the end of the Bandmasters' Course in 2003.
Since leaving the Royal Marines Band Service Don has carved out a second career as a music teacher. He completed the Graduate Teacher Programme in June 2009 and has taught at several schools and colleges across Hampshire and West Sussex. In February 2023 Don was appointed as the Assistant Director of Music at St Catherine’s school, Bramley, Surrey.
This year, we are again asking that your own chairs are not brought in to the concert venue - we will provide seating. You are welcome to bring your own chairs and tables for picnics in the church grounds from 6pm, and we will store your chairs and tables in the church hall during the performance.
Note for disabled ticket holders: Space will be at a premium for this performance, and so if you are attending in a wheelchair, we request that for your comfort and safety you let us know in advance, so that we can reserve space for you. You can email us at wmf@stgeorgesnews.org quoting your booking reference number. Thank you for your understanding.
