Meridian Winds

Two instrumental music teachers, Tim Norris and Tim Warren, formed the Meridian Winds in 1997. Their object is to produce an enjoyable atmosphere where musicians can share their love of music of all styles and perform to the highest possible standard.

The Meridian Winds is based in Southampton. They enjoy a varied repertoire ranging from the best of contemporary music through transcriptions to the more conventional marches, waltzes and overtures.

Don Lloyd, Musical Director of the Meridian Winds

Don grew up in Bournemouth, a major musical influence in his teenage years was the Bandmaster at Oakmead School for Boys, Courtney Bosanko. Don joined the Royal Marines School of Music, Deal, in 1976, as a bassoonist. He passed out from training a term early in 1978 and was posted to Staff Band as the Principal Bassoon. Don then served with the Royal Marines Band Service for 32 years, rising to the rank of Warrant Officer (2) Bandmaster, concluding his career as the Chief Instructor Higher Training, at the Royal Marines School of Music, HMS Nelson. Whilst in the Royal Marines Band Service he served all over the world, particular highlights being the hand-over of Hong Kong in 1996.

He was one of the first group of Royal Marine Musicians to graduate with BMus(Hons) in 2002 through the association with Portsmouth University. He then gained the LRSM (conducting diploma) with distinction at the conclusion of the Bandmasters’ Course in 2003.

Since leaving the Royal Marines Band Service he has carved out a second career as a music teacher. In 2008, he was appointed as the teacher of music (later Head of Music) at the Bourne Community College, Southbourne, West Sussex. He has since taught at several schools in West Sussex as Head of Music and Deputy Head Teacher.

In September 2018 he joined St Catherine’s School, Bramley where he is the Symphony Orchestra conductor, Bassoon teacher and Classroom music teacher. He also works for Southampton Music Service as a Woodwind teacher and Musical Director for the Brassroots brass band. Don also is a tutor at the European Youth Music Scheme (EYSM) which is a summer course held annually in Guildford.

In February 2009 Don was appointed as the Musical Director of the Meridian Winds.
