Macmillan coffee morning

The final total raised from the Macmillan Coffee Morning held in the church on Friday 29th September was £442.65.

Harvest Thanksgiving

Our Harvest Thanksgiving Service was on Sunday 8th October, where we collected food, cleaning products and toiletries which were sent on to Waterlooville Food Bank and The Two Saints Centre. Afterwards we enjoyed a “Bring and Share” lunch in the Church Hall. At 6pm there was a Harvest Evensong in the church.

GeorgesMen brewery visit

On 13th October I became an “honorary man” - just for the evening. The Men’s Group was visiting Bowman’s Brewery and needed “extras” to make up the numbers. Our two minibuses dropped us at the Brewery and we all assembled inside along with another group. We all grabbed a glass - pint or half (I chose a ladylike half pint pot glass) and we sampled whichever beer we fancied. Then Martin, our host, took us for a tour of the Brewery and explained the process to us, very interesting and informative.

Then it was back to the sampling area. We had all been asked to bring nibbles “to soak up the beer” and there was a large table of snacks and sandwiches.

Our taxis arrived at 10.30pm - I noticed quite a few people left on bikes - probably a wise move!

It was a most enjoyable evening and now I know what the men get up to on their GeorgesMen outings!

Church Shop

Our Church Shop ran this year from 16th to 28th October.

We had great premises - in the old “Bibs and Bobs” shop. There was shelving, a small kitchen area and upstairs another shop area and a cloakroom.

We sold almost everything! Kitchen ware, china and glass, furniture, men’s, ladies and children’s clothes, bags and scarves, games and toys. We even had our own “Christmas Shop”.

Thanks to the hard work of our organisers and volunteers, we raised over £4,000 for church funds.

Concerts at St George’s

St George’s has hosted three concerts during October and November.

On Saturday 14th October Denmead Brass gave an Autumn Concert featuring guest Vocalist, Jessica Fitzjohn.

On 28th October a “Gilbert and Sullivan Evening” with Opera Comique included “The Sorcerer”, in two Acts, followed by a much shorter “Trial by Jury”.

The third concert was on 25th November with Cantemus Choir performing Mozart’s Requiem Mass in D Minor.

Barn Dance

The Social Committee organised a Barn Dance for Saturday 11th November, which was enjoyed by all who attended, the raffle raising £83 towards Church funds.

Some future events being planned by the Social Committee include a Revue and Entertainment show on February 10th, an Open Garden at Christine Culley’s home on 2nd June, a Travelling Supper on 30th June, and a Coffee Morning at Margaret Deal’s home on 14th July.

There will also be Lent Lunches organised on Wednesdays in the hall during Lent.

Re-dedication of the Font

On 21st April vandals destroyed the historic Font in St George’s Church, and the Paschal Candle. We received help and support from far and wide, and now, at a cost of approaching £2,000, the repaired Font is in place and was re-dedicated by Fr Ray Chapman on Sunday 26th November.

Christmas Bazaar

St George’s Bazaar was held in our Church Hall on Saturday 2nd December. We had stalls selling cakes, plants, crafts, books, games and lots of “Christmassy” things. Also a tombola, chocolate tombola and a Grand Raffle.

On the day a total of £1,554.19 was raised for Church Funds.
