Despite having rained for a large part of the day four of us Tweenies, and guest, found a gap in the weather and took the advertised evening walk. It was very knowledgeably led by Dawn Hyett who took us into the Stansted Estate from Rowlands Castle. Dodging the mucky tracks left by the forestry workers proved to be the only occasional problem. The only other forest users we saw were two men and a plethora of wild orchids. Having walked for an hour or so what else would we need but a thirst-slaker! Many thanks Dawn.
In the idyllic setting of Sue’s Catherington garden, 14 Tweenies (plus two hopeful dogs) crowded around the table, armed with drinks and puddings, to discuss whom each would like as their ideal dinner guest.
What a varied selection too! From the historical - Elizabeth 1 and Florence Nightingale, to the controversial - Germaine Greer, to the political --Jacob Rees-Mogg. Actors/ Comedians receiving an imaginary invite included Miranda Hart, Stephen Fry, Sandi Toksvig, Dawn French and Michael Palin. Also included were astronaut, Tim Peake and antique dealer, James Braxton. Donny Osmond received one invite and Cliff two (he is off to Janet’s first!). Not to forget members of the clergy and episcopate, all of which amount to quite a comprehensive list!
I mentioned puddings and it may be wondered if we had time to eat amongst the talking – well, yes, some of us had at least seconds! What an amazing display of dishes too – from eclairs and chocolate tart, fresh minted pineapple, various cheesecakes, cream sponges, bakewell pudding and trifles. An enjoyable evening but apologies to our canine friends – perhaps next time it will be more interesting for you both!
