In Once Upon a Time Land
Our story will begin.
With Cinderella skivvying
For most unpleasant kin.
Her glamorous stepmother,
Stepsisters both so mean,
Treat Cinders quite appallingly,
Their Palace made to clean.
A Royal Invitation,
Attendance at a Ball,
Delivered to each household,
Open to one and all.
Stepmum and Ugly Sisters
Excitedly prepare.
Determine Cinderella
Somehow will not be there.
Tear up her Invitation.
Poor Cinders is distraught.
In search of consolation
In kitchen, friends are sought.
Then meets her Fairy ‘God-Dad’
Quite sinister, but kind,
And magical Godmother,
Solutions now will find.
A ballgown and tiara
Make Cinders look the part.
In tiny coach and horses
To castle will depart.
A final word of warning
Delivered, that their power
Time limited, means Cinders
Must leave at midnight hour.
The guests are all enquiring –
“Who is this maiden fair?”
Prince Charming is enchanted,
And love is in the air.
But as the clock is striking
With sonorous intone,
It’s twelve o’clock and Cinders
Is forced to scurry home.
Bewildered and heart broken,
Only a token left,
A rather bendy slipper
Of glass, he holds, bereft.
Back at the Palace later
The Prince’s wish is learned.
Whoever fits this slipper,
A marriage will have earned.
The Sisters fail to pass the test,
Their feet are just all wrong.
But on our Cinders tiny foot
The slipper does belong.
And so a happy ending,
The Prince has found his bride.
And as with all good Pantos
There’s joy at Christmas-tide.
